CONMEBOL Qualifiers – What you need to know
The FIFA World Cup is the biggest competition in world football and, in 2026, 48 of the best national teams from the men’s game will come together for a tournament watched by over five billion people.
With the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico already guaranteed qualification as hosts, the remaining 45 spots have been divided amongst the six member considerations, where UEFA (Europe) receive 16 direct slots; CAF (Africa) receive 9; AFC (Asia) receive 8; CONMEBOL (South America) receive 6; CONCACAF (Central and South America as well as the Caribbean) receive 3; and the OFC (Oceania) receive 1, with two additional slots allocated to the two winners from the play-offs.
SBS and SBS On Demand will provide live coverage of 54 qualifying matches from the South American confederation, in what is an early taste of elite football action for Australian audiences.
World champions Argentina are among the national teams vying for a place in the World Cup, as are arch-rivals Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
With each team having already played six qualifying matches, the remaining 12 home-and-away fixtures for each national team will take place from September 2024 to September 2025 – of which, 54 will air live and free on SBS.
How to watch the South American qualifiers
Each match will take place during FIFA’s allocated international windows, where nations will contest two qualifying matches in September, October and November of 2024, as well as Mach, June and September of 2025.
Of the 10 CONMEBOL nations, SBS will feature six home qualifiers from Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador and Venezuela, while Argentina and Brazil each have six home games shown live and on demand.
With each team playing on the same day and in some cases at the same time,
SBS On Demand
will show every match live with the marquee matchup simulcast to SBS.
What if I can’t watch the game live?
Each match will have a full replay available shortly after full-time on SBS On Demand, along with a 25-minute mini match and short highlights.
Australians accessing the
dedicated SBS On Demand Hub
will be able to browse by their favourite national teams, most recent fixtures, or video type in order to find the match they would like to view.
